Public Health

Editor in Chief | Editorial Board | Articles and Contributors Graduate Award

Public health considers the community at large its patient. As a field of study, its mission to assess, develop, and assure the health of a population provides common ground across fields such as political science, sociology, history, and economics. Because of the broad, extensive nature of public health, a vast amount of scholarship and research already exists besides the regular influx of new material. Scholars and professionals must constantly consider new discoveries, new interpretations, and new theoretical ideas in the field. The overlapping fields of practice involved in the study of public health make it challenging to stay informed about every applicable area. Oxford Bibliographies in Public Health is designed to provide authoritative guidance to scholars and students who are faced with the challenge of navigating the constant avalanche of information across disciplines and at all levels of scholarly research. Besides the multiple disciplines that public health must draw upon for theoretical understanding, measurement methods, and empirical evidence, it must encompass the multiple communicable and chronic diseases that constitute threats to whole populations, the various applications in highly varied communities and populations according to demographic, cultural, social and political differences, and strategic considerations based on policy, administrative, economic and logistical realities facing those who must plan, implement and evaluate programs.

GRADUATE STUDENT ARTICLE AWARD

The Oxford Bibliographies Graduate Student Article Award is an annual, invitation-only award that offers experienced doctoral candidates an opportunity to contribute to Oxford Bibliographies in Public Heath, to draw attention to their work, and to add a peer-reviewed publication to their CVs. Invitation is by faculty nomination only. Nominations are no longer being accepted for this year’s award. Please check back soon for information about next year’s award.

“Graduate students are by necessity deeply and critically engaged in the literature within emerging areas of research. This knowledge puts them in an ideal position to write for Oxford Bibliographies. I am particularly excited about the potential of this award as a pathway to including articles on cutting-edge topics, and I think it is an important acknowledgement of the significant contribution graduate students routinely make to the production of new scholarship.”

--Damon Zucca, Reference and Online Publisher, Oxford University Press
